Swing Low Sweet Chariot

Last night we turned on the fix for the swing bug, where the swing tempo was attached to the frame rate.
I’m going to step through what was happening before. When the frame rate was below 25fps we couldn’t get enough feedback into the game from the controller to work out how well you’d swung the club so we’d default to 100% power. As we’ve optimised the game over time the issue of “94% swings” came in. This was happening because when you were actually always swinging a 94% but when you played shots which were affected by a low FPS you’d get defaulted to 100%. This is obviously wrong, and totally inconsistent. It would affect you right when you were in the rhythm and normally right at the least opportune times. This bug affected PS4 users most 1) because it’s running at 1080p unlike the Xbox at 900p and 2) because you don’t have the graphic options PC users have to get the desired FPS.
So the ultimate fix was to decouple the swing from the FPS so that it would be consistent, give more granularity in the power and in the long term give us the beginnings of a solution for the short game. Pushing this live has caused quite a stir. We did last week for a small time, but found an issue with the backswing so turned it off again. But it’s now on and working, in our opinion. It’s the same on all platforms but Xbox and PC users are having less of an issue as the swing technique they were using previously was rarely defaulting to 100 as the FPS was higher for those users. A few PS4 users though feel that it’s a huge change. It’s not, you’re just not benefiting from the bug now and should have more consistency on the swing once you’ve mastered the timing. There is no need to slam the stick, you just need a fluid motion and wait for your guy to get to the top of the swing. We made this video earlier to show the technique I use to get 100% every time. The plan at the moment is to monitor peoples feedback and go from there.
