Craig118 - Designer Showcase - The Golf Club

1. How long have you been playing The Golf Club?
A: Since July 2014
2. How would you describe your style of designing?
A: On courses from scratch I like to take a generated random plot, get down to eye level and try to imagine the hole layout into the given terrain. Love a great risk reward hole so I tend to try to visualize a hole that can be set up as such. I like to emphasize the bunkering and mounding and fit it naturally into the surrounding terrain. Open fairways with Large , segmented, rolling greens with ample chipping areas for recovery. Most of my fictional courses I design for Protee use and play a bit too easy with a gamepad. I try to keep them playable with real clubs for us mortal players that don’t hit every drive 260 yards into a 10 yard radius .
3. What do you use for inspiration when designing your courses?
A: A lot of Inspiration comes from holes I have played over and over the last 40 plus years here in Central Ohio. Most of those would be Jack Kidwell courses, he designed over 100 in Ohio. I also like Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus designs and their ability to make a course both Penal enough for pro’s and playable for the 36 HDCP’ers just by changing Pin location and approach angles.
4. Which two of your own courses are your favorites?
A: Pine Valley and Whistling Straits
5. Do you play golf in real life?
A: Yes, have played since I was 6. Used to be 6-8 HDCP. Probably closer to a 10 these days with the lack of play and the related hit it takes on the short game. Pretty sure that will improve again once I can start playing every day in a couple years .
6. Besides playing/designing in TGC , what are your other hobbies?
A: Fishing, Hiking, working on Vacation/Retirement home in TN.
7. What is your favorite ice cream?
A: Anymore its a Klondyke bar…..portability is key.
