Dev Diary – XB1 and PS4 Knockout

The HB Knockout Tournament started a few weeks ago on all three platforms. It was an idea hatched by Elz_41 and HB_KeithC. The turnout was very good with 160 players across the PS4, XB1 and PC. The way it worked was each Knockout round was two rounds of golf on the same course with the cut line eliminating half of the field. The next round was played on a new course with half the field again getting eliminated. That continued until it got down to the final two players.
Last week saw the finals for both the XB1 and the PS4. Just like the PC finals, the final contestants streamed their rounds on Twitch which were then turned around and streamed on HB Studios’ Twitch feed with a team commenting on the action.
The XB1 finals were between Roddymac and Twist1771 with HB_KeithC and Elz_41 calling the action on Magnolia National (Saturday) by theCLV24. You can watch the final match here on our Youtube channel:

Let’s take a look how each of the finalists got to the Championship match.

Round 1:
Roddymac (-9) and Twist1771 (-8) Cut Line: (-2)

Round 2:
Roddymac (-24) and Twist1771 (-22) Cut Line: (-19)

Round 3:
Twist1771 (-15) and Roddymac (-15) Cut Line: (-15)

Round 4:
Twist1771 (-23) and Roddymac (-22) Cut Line: (-22)

Round 5:
Twist1771 (-19) and Roddymac (-15) Cut Line: (-15)

The match started with Roddymac coming out on fire with a birdie, eagle, birdie start. He put Twist1771 behind the eight ball right way as Twist1771 was +1 through three holes. Roddymac would play conservative after the huge start. After nine holes, Roddymac was sitting at -4 and Twist1771 was still at +1. Both players would bogey #10 but Twist1771 went on to bogey #11 as well. They went to the 15th tee with Roddymac at -5 and Twist1771 at +2. Roddymac would have an enjoyable walk up the 18th hole as he stood at -6 and Twist1771 was at +2 for the day. That’s the way they would finish. Roddymac just had the dream start and played steady the rest of the way, forcing Twist1771 to play catch up all day which just proved to be a very tough task. Congrats to Roddymac on the first ever XB1 Knockout Championship.

On the PS4 side, the finalists were Disturbed932 and Miacanes12, playing their match on Magnolia National (Friday) by the CLV24. With Elz_41 traveling, Fuzion was kind enough to step in to the booth to co-host with HB_KeithC for the PS4 Championship. Here is the video to the match:

Round 1:
Disturbed (-15) and Miacanes (-8) Cut Line: (-1)

Round 2:
Disturbed (-24) and Miacanes (-22) Cut Line: (-18)

Round 3:
Disturbed (-21) and Miacanes (-16) Cut Line: (-15)

Round 4:
Miacanes (-27) and Disturbed (-27) Cut Line: (-22)

Round 5:

Both players got off to steady starts, making a birdie on the par 5 second hole. Miacanes kept the putter going with a birdie on the difficult 4th hole to take a one shot lead. Disturbed returned the favor with an improbable birdie from 30 feet away on #5. Pars would follow from each player until both made birdie on the par 5 8th hole to each get to -3. Miacanes made a 10 footer on #9 for birdie to take a one shot lead to the back nine.
Miacanes made a great approach shot on #11 to have a tap in for birdie. That gave him a 2 shot lead as the players went to #12. He followed it up with another birdie on #12 to get to -6. The players then headed to #13 with Miacanes holding a 3 shot lead. Both hit good drives but Disturbed just found the light rough and had to lay up on the par 5. Shockingly, Miacanes put it into the creek on his approach which led to a par against Disturbed’s birdie and suddenly the lead was down to 2 shots for Miacanes. On #14, Disturbed hit his shot into 7 feet and it looked like the momentum was turning. Miacanes was looking at a 29 footer and just drained it right in the center of the hole. Disturbed also made his birdie putt so the lead was still 2 shots with four holes to go.
On #15, after Disturbed hit his approach shot in the water, it made it almost a done deal for Miacanes. They both made par but that was not going to be good enough for Disturbed. Both players hit great tee shots on #16 and made their putts for birdie which put the scores at -8 and -6. After they both made par on #17, they went to the 18th hole with Miacanes holding a 2 shot lead. Miacanes put his second shot into 18 about 10 feet away. Disturbed was unable to hole his approach and that gave the victory to Miacanes as he made his birdie putt to finish at -9 to Disturbed’s -7. Congrats to Miacanes on winning the first Knockout Tournament on PS4.
